چکیده

Inferring user preferences over a set of items is an important problem that has found numerous applications. This work focuses on the scenario where the explicit feature representation of items is unavailable, a setup that is similar to collaborative filtering. In order to learn a user’s preferences from his/her response to only a small number of pairwise comparisons, we propose to leverage the pairwise comparisons made by many crowd users, a problem we refer to as crowdranking. The proposed crowdranking framework is based on the theory of matrix completion, and we present efficient algorithms for solving the related optimization problem. Our theoretical analysis shows that, on average, only O(r logm) pairwise queries are needed to accurately recover the ranking list of m items for the target user, where r is the rank of the unknown rating matrix, r m. Our empirical study with two real-world benchmark datasets for collaborative filtering and one crowdranking dataset we collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk shows the promising performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.

Preference Completion: Large-scale Collaborative Ranking from Pairwise Comparisons

In this paper we consider the collaborative ranking setting: a pool of users each provides a small number of pairwise preferences between d possible items; from these we need to predict each users preferences for items they have not yet seen. We do so by fitting a rank r score matrix to the pairwise data, and provide two main contributions: (a) we show that an algorithm based on convex optimiza...

Learning User Preferences By Adaptive Pairwise Comparison

Users make choices among multi-attribute objects in a data set in a variety of domains including used car purchase, job search and hotel room booking. Individual users sometimes have strong preferences between objects, but these preferences may not be universally shared by all users. If we can cast these preferences as derived from a quantitative user-specific preference function, then we can p...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

Large-Scale Speaker Ranking from Crowdsourced Pairwise Listener Ratings

Speech quality and likability is a multi-faceted phenomenon consisting of a combination of perceptory features that cannot easily be computed nor weighed automatically. Yet, it is often easy to decide which of two voices one likes better, even though it would be hard to describe why, or to name the underlying basic perceptory features. Although likability is inherently subjective and individual...

Semi-Crowdsourced Clustering: Generalizing Crowd Labeling by Robust Distance Metric Learning

One of the main challenges in data clustering is to define an appropriate similarity measure between two objects. Crowdclustering addresses this challenge by defining the pairwise similarity based on the manual annotations obtained through crowdsourcing. Despite its encouraging results, a key limitation of crowdclustering is that it can only cluster objects when their manual annotations are ava...
